Paul Appleby – Ah! je vais l’aimer from Berlioz’s BEATRICE ET BENEDICT
I saw a live production of this opera once, adapted for the Cleveland Institute of Music. I believe this is the song in which Benedict is tricked into believing that Beatrice is in love with him and resolves to be … Continue reading
Theodora (Händel) – Krisztina Szabó, mezzo-soprano
Once again, I share a singer from the performance of Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor and also singing Handel. She sang the mezzo soprano role.
Joélle Harvey sings “V’adoro pupille” from Handel’s Giulio Cesare
I heard Joelle Harvey sing the soprano part in Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor. She has a lovely voice.
“His Name is Jan” sung by Kiera Duffy
I saw Kiera Duffy make her Cleveland Orchestra debut. She didn’t sing this; she actually sang Exsultante Jubilate by Mozart. But I wanted to share a a sample of her singing.
Glitter and Be Gay Natalie Dessay
This is a very good recording of Glitter and Be Gay from Candide by Leonard Bernstein. The coloratura is really very pretty. I love the way the song swings between the flashy, exuberant coloratura and the slow, sad portions.

I am not a fan of Wagner. Jonas Kaufmann eloquently said that, as a child, Wagner’s music resembled shouting giants. He is not wrong. And yet, Jonas Kaufmann can make shouting giants sound appealing. It may even make me look … Continue reading

Se quel guerrier io fossi! … Celeste Aida by Placido Domingo
Gotta love Placido.

“Vecchia zimarra, senti” by Ildebrando D’Arcangelo
I saw a small, but lovely, production of La Boheme at the Ohio Theater in June. This is an aria sung by one of the characters, who is going to sell his winter coat to provide Mimi with a muff … Continue reading

Ach, Ich Fuhl’s by Genia Kühmeier
We return again to Die Zauberflote, which has some wonderful music wasted on a terrible story. Seriously, I do not care about Tamino’s search for Masonic enlightenment. But, this is a very famous aria, and for good reason. It is … Continue reading
