Emma’s Random (post surgery) thoughts part 3

1 Recovery rarely happens in a straight upward line.  This can be frustrating at times.

2 It’s also hard to know if you’re spending too much time in bed.  For example, on Sunday I spent too much time sitting up and got exhausted.  Then the past two days I spent too much time lying down.  Tomorrow I hope to do better at finding a balance.

3 I miss my parathyroids too.  They are so useful, managing your blood calcium level.  Such a pain to do that yourself.  They better get over the shock of surgery soon and start functioning again!

4 My voice feels a lot better tonight!  I talked, actually talked (!) to my mom, and she said, “Wow.  You’re a lot more talkative tonight.”  My voice still sounds weird and weaker than normal, but nowhere near as bad as it did.

5 I love the show Bones.  Can’t help it.

6 I love texting too.  Such an easy way to keep in touch with friends and let them know how you’re doing.

7 Beef is a miracle food after surgery.

8 I watched the movie The Seventh Seal.  I didn’t get it.  I mean, I get the plot and everything, but I still want to know why this film was so influential.  Sometimes that’s hard to discern.  I watched Citizen Kane last November for the first time in over ten years, and it was so easy to see the influence!  I remember thinking, “Wow, for a film made 70 years ago, it seems so modern!”  I guess I’ll need to do some reading about The Seventh Seal and Igmar Bergman’s role in modern cinema.  Where’s Martin Scorsese when you need him?

9 I also watched Julie and Julia.  I was glad that Julie and her husband in the movie did not get divorced.  I remember thinking, “If they get divorved because the wife is cooking French food and spends 20 minutes a day on the internet, that’s just stupid.”

10 How do you undlerline words on Word Press?  I haven’t figured that out.

11 I find it annoying, a bit, that from now on my body will be reliant on a doctor to manage my thyroid hormone.  If I gain or lose weight in the future, my body won’t automatically adjust as it did in the past.  I’ll have to see the doctor and have a blood test.  I feel a little helpless about that, and that’s annoying.

12 I have to take the thyroid medication first thing in the morning, well before eating anything else, otherwise my body won’t absorb it.

13 Calcium especially blocks the absorbtion, so this can be frustrating because I have to take calcium throughout the day because my parathyroid hormones aren’t functioning normally yet.  (It takes about a week or so for them to recover from surgery.)

14 So I took the hormone medication at 3:30 this morning, when I woke up in the middle of the night.  They actually recommend taking it if you wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom.

15 I love American Experience.  I watched God in America (great series about the history or religion and religious liberty in the US), FDR, and I have a biography on Eugene O’Neil.  I love PBS.

16 That being said, I’m hoping to read Happy Days tomorrow by Samuel Beckett.  I also requested a copy of To the Actor, a book by Michael Checkov.  No, I don’t act, but I had a prof. who was really into Checkov technique.  I’ll explain more about that after I read the book.

17 Thanks Exiledtyke for liking my post.  Good luck with your blog and with Lymphoma!

That’s it for now everyone.

Oh, the Seventh Seal and Citizen Kane feel like heavy movies. I can’t remember the last time I watched a “serious” movie. I’m glad you enjoyed Julie & Julia though! I still haven’t seen it, but have heard good things about it.

If you read special material during your recovery, please do share! I’m looking for a new reading list these days. These changes you have to make with you body, relying on medicine every day, sound very difficult and it sounds like you’re dealing with a lot of things right now. If you feel like talking more, please know that you can reach me at my email (janie5jones@yahoo.com). I hope your day this week is going better since your return from the hospital!

    • Yeah, Julie and Julia was entertaining. I was just so relieved they didn’t have Julie and her husband divorce, because that would have been supremely stupid.

Yeah, I will definitely let people know about my reading lists. I am going to read Happy Days today and then probably To The Actor and Silas Marner. I’ve also got some children’s books I want to read, since I’m working on my K-3 licensure.

      Thanks again!
